The knee is the largest joint in the body. Whether walking, bending or with activities, the knee is vital while standing or in motion. Most of us move without giving our knees a second thought… until they become injured or if pain develops.

Knee injuries occur in people of all ages. Knee pain is a common cause of chronic pain. According to the Institute of Medicine, over 100 million Americans suffer with chronic pain, costing $600 billion a year in health care and lost productivity.

There are many factors or causes contributing to knee pain, some of which include:

  • Trauma (automobile accident, slip and fall, sports injury)

  • Previous injury

  • Repetitive motion or overuse (sports or occupation)

  • Excess weight

  • Mechanical problem

  • Weak muscle strength or flexibility

  • Medical condition (arthritis, gout, etc.)

If you are experiencing knee pain, you should speak with your doctor or healthcare provider, who may recommend an evaluation to determine if treatment is necessitated. In addition to pain, other signs or symptoms may include:

  • Instability - the knee may feel loose or weak.

  • Stiffness in the knee joint, difficulty straightening or flexing the knee.

  • Swelling in the knee, possibly with redness or the knee may be warm to the touch.

  • Tenderness in the back of the knee.

  • Hearing a popping or crunching sound.

Your doctor or healthcare provider may recommend an MRI to assist with a diagnosis and/or course of treatment for various injuries, including - Meniscus Tears, Ligament Injuries and Tendon Issues.
